The importance of a promise

Stop and think before you make a promise. Try and realize just what you are getting yourself in for. It is much better to say, "I'm not sure I can do this," than make a promise that you cannot fulfill.
What You Are Getting Yourself In For
You are saying that you will defiantly do something at an agreed on time. Another person or a group of people depend on you keeping your promise. They arrange their schedules solely on the power of your words. Breaking your promise is, then a very selfish and thoughtless thing to do. Others are doing their end of the bargain. It's very inconsiderate not to hold up your end of the bargain.
A promise is an informal contract. Breaking a promise is, morally, the same as breaking a business contract (although there are no legal grounds to hold you to a purely verbal contract). You better be sure you can keep this promise or there will be trouble.
There are times when you do have to break a promise, such as if you're lying in a coma. In those rare and extreme instances, it is okay to break the promise. No one would hold a person in a coma to a promise made in the pre-comatose days. But the majority of broken promises are for far more trivial reasons.
The Other Side Of The Promise Coin
When you hear someone make a promise to you, don't believe them. You are not in their heads, so you do not know their true motives for making you a promise. Some people do get a kick out of lying. Making a promise they fully intend to break is a kind of lie.
There are also people who don't intend to break their promise because they cannot ever remember making the promise in the first place. Many alcoholics, drug addicts and incredibly insecure people will promise you the sun and the moon just to get on your good side. They don't understand or they don't care what the long term implications of their promises are. Politely thank them for their promise, but continue your plans as if they never made the promise. In this way, you have protected yourself and can be pleasantly surprised if the promise is kept.
There was once a time when a man (or woman) was only as good as their word. Well, like most every other form of currency, words have greatly depreciated in value. Most people must think they are as worthless as their words, for they love to make promises but never like to actually fulfill them.
It's very rare to find someone in these times who understands that a promise is a priority to get something done.
And when you find them, treasure them. They are an endangered species.
